Although it seems incredible that there should be an English-language detective series based in Laos, there it is. A British-born writer, Colin Cotterill, began the series after a stint of working in Laos. He remains based in Thailand. His detective is actually a pathologist and not young.

Sounds like an excellent way to learn something about a country and culture that few of us are likely to visit in person.
