Review of Tales of Judge Dee
In this preface to Tales of Judge Dee, Zhu Xiao Di suggests that perhaps it's better if a native Chinese writes Judge Dee stories than a foreigner. All I can say is, this book would be a good argument. Although I have not read Robert van Gulik's Judge Dee stories for several years, my impression upon reading Zhu's book is that he succeeds marvelously in retaining a very Chinese perspective in the structure and execution of these stories.

van Gulik's position in the Western history of Chinese studies is secure, and his writing adventure (moving from translation of an original story to creation of a series of original stories) was probably not the contribution he considered his greatest to Chinese scholarship. Zhu's own contribution was stimulated, one presumes, entirely by the existence of van Gulik's work, and we are rewarded by his belief that he could not only continue a modern retelling of Dee stories but, perhaps, improve upon that enterprise.

He's got my vote.
